What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The SSP is a therapeutic intervention that helps to regulate the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and improve emotional regulation and social engagement
-Dr. Stephen Porges
Non-invasive Polyvagal Theory-based listening therapy with vagus nerve stimulation
Reduces stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience
Regulates physical state so clients feel calmer and more present improving receptivity to other therapies
Applicable for children and adults with anxiety, Autism, ADHD, trauma history and other diagnoses
How does the SSP work?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence- based listening therapy designed to reduce sound sensitivities and improve auditory processing, behavioral state regulation, and social engagement behaviors through filtered music

The SSP acts as a non invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to retune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience.

The SSP involves listening to specifically filtered music through headphones alongside a provider, in-person or remotely.

Suitable for children and adults, the SSP has demonstrated benefits of individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences and more.
The SSP allows for the repatterning of neural networks and improved regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) for lasting change.
Based on hierarchical recruitment of the ANS, the SSP trains the middle ear muscles to tune-in to cues of safety signaled by the frequencies of human voice, which stimulates the social engagement system through the neural network associated with listening.

Understanding Polyvagal Theory gives us a scientific framework that can be applied through physiological or "bottom up" approaches, helping clients become more aware, regulated and resilient.
